About.

A versatile and highly experienced journalist, I’ve written and edited for more than a dozen national and international titles over my 25-year career, including The Sunday Times, The Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, Independent and the Telegraph, and for a range of Hearst, Condé Nast and Immediate Media magazines, including Food & Travel, Lonely Planet, Runner’s World and Men’s Health.

I’ve spent 15 years as a commissioning editor with three different titles. I was on the staff at The Sunday Times for eight years, half of them as Travel Editor, during which the supplement was three times named Travel Section of the Year. I’m a past winner of the Martin Wills Memorial Trust award for sports writing and I’ve been shortlisted for four Press Awards.

I currently balance feature writing for the likes of National Geographic Traveller, Delayed Gratification, Financial Times, The Sunday Times Magazine and the Telegraph with writing and co-writing projects for major publishers. My debut non-fiction book with HarperCollins was a Sunday Times Top 10 bestseller. My second will be published in 2027.

I seek wherever possible to combine writing with my passion for adventure. Memorable assignments include kayaking in Antarctica; trekking through the Congo; ski-touring in the High Arctic; shadowing Mountain Rescue in Snowdonia; running across the Sahara; cycling the Tour de France’s Grand Depart; tidal-bore rafting in Nova Scotia; hiking through Nepal’s Annapurna range; visiting the Falklands with my father, a veteran of the 1982 conflict; journeying through the Namib; heliskiing in Andorra; trail running in Norway’s Lofoten Islands; and undertaking a 1,000-mile self-powered circumnavigation of Scotland by bike, kayak and on foot.

I’ve interviewed numerous high-profile individuals from all walks of life: CEOs and celebrity chefs; World Cup winners and Formula One champions; comedians and Grammy-nominated singers; photographers and bestselling authors. Pelé, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Martin Parr, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Martina Navratilova, Joan Collins, Jamie Oliver and Jonah Lomu are a few of the more memorable. I’m a trained videographer and shoot and edit my own films when on assignment, and I’ve hosted on-stage Q&As at the Royal Geographical Society and panels at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

This site is a fond (if recency-bias-skewed) curation of a few dozen of my favourite assignments to date. For queries and commissions, do get in touch.
